I saw in another post where backfiring through the carb is an indication of one of several conditions but I don't have a manual, and have no idea how to set timing or where to look for a sheared key or the procedure on how to adjust valves............bob

With the singles the courage & command are the same service wise.
Do the right thing and having used he manual they were good enough to scan & put on line, buy your parts from them as well.
