When starting i get a bad kick back from pull starting GX200 what causes this?

Valves out of adjustment, flywheel key partially sheared would be the top two guesses.

Do you know what the adjustment is for exhaust, intake and if it's soupose to be Top Dead center on piston.

While you are waiting for Robert to post the Honda specs, remove the top covers and flywheel retainers and check the flywheel key.
If the 2 halves of the hole line up to make a nice square then chances are it is ok but it is worthwhile to try to turn the flywheel while locking the blades from turning, if it is loose the key is toast.

Ok but this is a vertical shaft engine That's a GX270

Let's start with the serial number, and I'll look-up some troubleshooting details. The number is stamped/etched into the side the block like this:

Well i can't get to this area to see it unless i remove the engine it's on a Ryan Lawnair 28.

don't you just hate that, Have to remove the engine from the machine just to see what engine you have. Had to do that on a place compactor back in march, and the replacement engine will be the same thing.

Okay, pass on digging out the serial number for now.

The GX200 did not change much over the years, so most specs/parts/etc. are the same. For example, the tune-up process is the same now as it was 15 years ago, as are the valve clearance specs:
Intake: 0.15 ア 0.02mm
Exhaust: 0.20 ア 0.02mm
Spark plug is a NGK BPR6ES, gap shoudl be set to 0.7~0.8 mm (0.028~0.031 in)
Engine oil is 0.63 quart of SAE 10W-30

Kicking back sure sounds like a timing issue. Will the engine start/run at all?

Well it did then i adjusted it and now it wont start so is that 0.15 in or mm, 0.20 in or mm and were can i get a flyweel puller for that it takes what size bolts for puller? 6 mm

if it makes a differance it's a GX270 and the serial number is GCBGT-1004352

You really don't need to pull the flywheel to check the key.
regardless of wether it is a horizontal, vertical diagonal or inverse shaft engine you just need to remove the cowl and in most cases the pull cord can stay on if you are spannar-phobic.
Then remove the flywheel retainer. the key is square and fits into a square hole made by two rectangle joining together ( techumseh excluded ) to form a square.
takes less time to do that reading this thread.

Valve clearance is set in mm (millimeters).

You local auto parts store should have a suitable puller. There are many styles available, most with a variety of bolts and patterns.

Well i did that and you really can't see inside the key hole is it supposed to be out even with the flywheel becuse i don't see it.

so you think it's a timing issue would that be the key way then?

Does this engine have a gear-reduction unit on the crankshaft?

If the hole is dead square then there is a 99% chance the key is OK.
The hole is about 2" long but the key is only 3/8" long so it is hard to see untill you pull the flywheel off which is most likely not required but if it makes you fell better to completely rule out ignition timing go ahead, it won't hurt.

OK removed flywleel and the keyway looks good any other ideas.
