Kawasaki engine KF82D-X Help Please

Trying to help a friend with a problem on an old Gator utility vehicle. The engine is a Kawasaki KF82D-x that does not have a spark at plug. The engine has an exciter coil behind flywheel and another coil mounted under flywheel metal shroud. Anyone that could give me any help troubleshooting ignition system would be great. If anyone has a repair manual in PDF format it would be great also. Thanks in advance for your help.

I surfed a bit and found several "other" attempts to locate your parts. It looks like your friend may have to install an electronic ignition. But not just a points eliminator, perhaps a complete system. Try looking at gardentractorpullingtips . That site provides lots of discussion on various ignition types and mods. I did find a couple sites promising free download of the manuals for your KF...., but they looked dangerous so I did not pursue.

Thank you so much for your help. I did find that the same engine is used in Club Car golf carts. I will do some more testing next week and post some results. my friend will have sticker shock when he finds out the CDI unit cost 200 dollars or more. I did find some resistance readings for the exciter coil and pulser coil that is located behind flywheel.

There is a copy of your manual (( for the golf cart ) on tradebit which is a safe download
301 Moved Permanently.
Downside it is $ 10

The poits & condenser can be replaced with an induction trigger module ( points eliminator ) if the coil is OK.
The coil needds to be tested and most bigger mower workshops will have a testing unit and usually test it for free.
If ok then pop in a replacement trigger unit ( about $30 ) if not they should be able to fit you up with a coil that will work.

However it needs to be a real workshop, not a dog kennel attached to the back of a glass fronted mega showroom where their only job is to give outrageously high quotes to support the new products sales team.

Ok,
According to the manual there were 3 different ignitions used on these engines.
There is no simple way to check the electronic type ignitions and even worse many are sets so you have to change the trigger coil , control module and power coil as a set.
The whole box & dice will need to tested with some quite speiific gear which only Kawasaki serice centeres will have and some specialist electrocing ignition specialists and in both cases it will not be cheap so start looking at a replacement engine.
Usually the potting mix used to seal the electronic components shrinks with age, moisture gets in and eventually creates internal shorts remembering that there is a lot of high voltages wizzing around there and the higher the voltager the lower the resistance offered by "insulators"

FWIW the auto industry standardised on 12 v because that is the resistance of dry skin otherwise back in the old days of plain painted steel interiors you would have been constantly creating short circuits.

thought i would post an update on the old Gator with the Kawasaki KF82D-x engine. After much testing and searching found a Club Car CDI module #1012520 that would replace Kawasaki part 316670-2002. Hope this may help someone out in the future.
