My mower is over three years old, out of warranty. It cuts off occasionally while mowing, but will start up immediately. John Deer doesn't know what is wrong with it, or maybe they don't acknowledge that anything is wrong.

Any one with experience with this problem?

Thanks.

I can understand where John Deere is coming from. That type of problem can be one of the hardest to trouble shoot. Sounds like something loose, shorts out, or losing fuel. A good service department should work with you on this.

I'm new to this forum as of today, and don't know how to surf it.

Anyway, I specifically need to know if anyone has this problem with their X500, and if they found the problem, just what was it.

It seems that the fuel shuts off, then backfire and dies about one time each hour when cutting grass. Cranks back up. Otherwise the X500 with that little yellow foot petal on the left side sure gets you out of a ditch very easily. Nice mower.

get an in line plug tester and watch what happens when it stops.
I am inclined to go with the others in suspecting a pinched earth wire on the ignition coil

Thanks fellows. Now I need to determine where the coil is. It has a 2-cylinder air cooled engine of course. Maybe there is a coil for each spark plug. Got to check it out! Thanks again.

Yep.
One coil for each cylinder.
They are just under the top cover.
Depending upon the model you may even have access plates otherwise off with the cowl and follow the plug leads back.
