briggs and stratton ic 14.5 hp....

after tear down found the following: 1 broken counterweight 1 broken connecting rod. will need a head gasket also. I am guessing over 100 dollars for new and used combined....cant find a used connecting rod. Here is the thing...i bought for $369.00 a 13.5 hp briggs and stratton on ebay new and free shipping and installed it in murray tractor and it is running fine. So some one talk sense into me.....why should i bother to fix it? By the way, the cam, crank, head, cylinder, crankcase look perfect....no damage.

Unless you want to sell it or have a backup, why bother to spend the money and time.

If was not such an unbeliever in the reliability of used counterweights, I would do it for a project. I have to believe the counterweight bearing surfaces take punishment after years of service and need to be replaced. I guess I will part it out. New engine is trouble free for the time being and hopefully many years to come.

You are the only person to know this? My thought would be recycle, its junk, but I don't like saving junk in my shop. I make a trip to the recycle yard once a year and bring home money.

Being a former parts guy, I'd need a complete list of what's needed, and price's to make a decision. And I'd also consider all new parts.

But part of making this decision is who you are. Do you like a challenge? Or are you tired of projects like this?

I am in a similar situation. My 16.5hp I/C recently ate a valve which was then impacted by the piston at least twice and driven through the top of the cylinder head in two separate locations before becoming lodged in the head. I haven't torn it down just yet but am going to base my decision on repair when I take the thing apart and see what damage this did to the piston and such.

Your damage sounds more serious. I know the feeling of hating to trash a partly good engine but it may cost more than it is worth to fix this one. See what you can find.
