Interesting Discussion with a Dealer about carb adjustment tools

Had a conversation with a dealer today while buying blades and such. Topic came up about different brands of equipment not lasting as long as they used to. Conversation evolved into a discussion about why consumers can't adjust carbs or get the tools. He informed me has had people try to come in and buy specials tools not allowed to be sold. FIRST OFFENSE IS $3500 But he said they can be bought over the internet. Not after consumer, they are after the dealers. Dealers sell them they get hammered.

He also said repairs for consumers would probably get worse because of rules manufacturers will have to abide by and changes in fuel.

Which makes sense govt could care less they don't want you using them anyway.

Like to see them stretch a cord across a couple of acres to weedeat.

Truly ridiculous. What a sad state of affairs  but like you said the politicians aren't the ones that have to deal with it cause they'll never have to touch a trimmer (or any power tool). If Obama had his way lawn equipment would be powered by wind

The official guidelines that I have seen from the EPA is it is a $38,500 fine to the dealer and a $3000 fine to the consumer if caught effective with the 2010 quideline changes. Prior to that day the maker, distributor, and dealer were responsible. Now the end user can also be fined. A $38,500 fine per day for any engine in the dealership missing the required emissions stickers

I am not a fan of Obama but it is not him who put this law or a lot of other laws in to law.
Like the saying goes Obama gets blamed for a lot of things bush did to this country

Oh I know he is not responsible for this particular law. I was just trying to be funny. He is a big supporter of clean energy which is cool I guess... It could be wrong of me but I'm a big fan of good old fossil fuels. Working at a coal burning power plant probably makes me a little bias though.

Bush gets blamed for everything that is wrong in this country and a Democratic Congress that was in place and passed it gets a free ride.

I have had two in the shop this year. Pretty cool system. They are 4 stroke, but don't have to worry about water in the gas, ethanol fuel, or stale fuel. the down side is they can get expensive to operate. I have heard that a 16 oz grill bottle last about 45 minutes. Some say it will last up to 2 hours.

Please, can tou explain to a puzzled English man what tools are they that you cannot buy. Over here if you can find the tools, they are yours to use. The penalties you are liable to, seem very high!

Cheers. Ron.

You don't need a lawn mower, or trimmer. Just Hire Captain Kirk!! He'll do all your lawn work. LOL
He is prob the only green lawn service out there.

Grumpy, I think they are talking about the two stroke carb adjusment tools. Over here the idle and enrichment needles are stubbed off and flush in counter bores. The shaft tips are purposely difficult to turn in small "D" configurations. There may be more.

Who in the world is enforcing this law, mow police? Dealers, I don't know what is going on now, but all the years I worked for them I never seen the mower police. The only law enfacement I ever came across working for a dealer was for NYS inspection for cars and trucks. Now 3000 dollar fine to the consumer I never heard such a BS story. Where in the world did this story come from. You are saying the mower police are coming to your house to check your equipment for the 2010 guidelines. I don't think so not my house anyways.

Remember the matress tag police? I think what has happened is that they have taken the emissions training so when they sneak a peek at your mattresses they can also look at hand tools.

Home owner or Dealer? Lawn equipment isn't license for the road and operated on private property. Its very hard for me to understand how anybody can just inspect someone's personal lawn equipment. Has California become a police state? Seeing I live in NY state I don't know what laws the dealers in California have to follow. 35,000 dollars would put a small business under, is that how the great state of California treats small business. Sure glad I don't live there. Here I NY we can still adjust a carburetor and not go to jail.
