Sam,

How did the conversion work for you? Am in the same boat when it comes to a broken flywheel for this saw. Thanks!

I received the new coil and a used flywheel (P/N: 11304001201A) for the MS-180. That was the saw whose parts I was trying on the 017. The coil did not fit the 017 - the mounting holes are not in the same place. The coil for an MS-170 may or may not fit the 017, but I just don't know.

As for the flywheel, that worked fine. The MS-180 flywheel fit on the taper and key perfectly, just like the old. Since that was as far as I could go, I tuned the L and H screws, and called it a day. The saw runs great!

I suspect that a coil and flywheel from the MS-170 might work, but I am not going to buy more parts for a saw that now runs. It's worth noting, in case it wasn't mentioned above, the reason the coil and flywheel were upgraded for models after the 017 was to improve acceleration (better timing I suspect).

Look at photos (I haven't done this yet) of the 017 coil and the MS-170 coil versus the MS-180 coil. There's a reasonable chance that the coils for the 017 and MS-170 are the same, while the one for the MS-180 is slightly different, but I just don't know.

Hope that helps! S

So I'm in a similar but different situation. I have an older 017 that I bought a replacement motor off Amazon for it. I got the 38mm version and discovered the coil mounting holes are different. Evidently there is and older and newer version of the 017. I believe the newer version changes the mounting holes for the newer style coil. I think it was mainly done to get more airflow around the coil as the old cylinder doesn't even have any fins under it. I know the parts guys I talked to said the older coils weren't very dependable. Anyways I was reading this trying to find out if I needed to change the flywheel as well as the coil, sounds like my old flywheel will work just need to get the newer coil.

Sorry for the delayed update (busy as usual), but this conversion did work in the end... :)
