Does anyone here have one of these lying around unused that they'd like to part with or know where I can find one? I've got a little 017 that I've rebuilt, but can't run it because the flywheel has been spun on the woodruff key rendering the saw a paper-weight.

Thank you!

There was an ignition module change mid-production on the 017 that caused a change in flywheel from what I've read on other forums. With the help of the Stihl software, I can see that the parts for the module and flywheel changed together, but I haven't looked at other nearby parts (maybe tonight).

I can't believe that Stihl would have re-tooled the housings for that little saw with the module change, instead making the new module and new flywheel fit what was already there. So, here's my question/theory:

Do you think a newer module and flywheel on an older 017 would work? I can NOT find the 11304001200 flywheel, but I can find the 11304001201 everywhere. The newer coil is readily available too. So, for about $45 in a module and a flywheel, do you think I might make her run again?

Not 100% sure but i think you can just swap in the new flywheel and coil from a MS170. On another forum guys were saying they upgraded a 017 from points to electronic by using MS170 flywheel and coil. See if a picture of a 170 coil looks like yours. The 170 does not have an advance curve in the coil so it can be a direct replacement for a point ignition.

The two ignition modules look slightly different, but I just realized that I have an MS180 that has the two "newer" style parts on it that are the same as the parts you mentioned for the MS170 (the coil and flywheel - SAME part numbers too) that I'm considering putting on the 017.

I'll swap them to see how the fit goes in a few days, see if I can get the correct gap between the flywheel and module, and see if the saw will run with those parts. I'll report back what I find...

Fish, you're on the right track! I FINALLY got to trying this swap and this is where I am right now:

I looked VERY closely at the two flywheels when swapping them for this test, and I really can't see any difference in the 11304001200 and 11304001201A units. Moving the 11304001201A flywheel from the MS180C to the 017 runs the 017 quite well, but I am concerned about acceleration, which was the reason for the upgrade by Stihl in the modules and flywheels in the first place from your post above.

I'm going to get an 11304001201 flywheel (not the A extension - can't find what that means anyway) and do a more "permanent" install and test the saw. I'm going to upgrade the coil to the 11304001302 version too. I believe this will solve the problem of not being able to find the 11304001200 flywheel.

Yep. See my post #8 above. I've still got some work to do (and testing), but I think this is going to work :)

Sam,

How did the conversion work for you? Am in the same boat when it comes to a broken flywheel for this saw. Thanks!
