HR215HXA All Oil Leaked Out at Once

Good Morning folks,

I'm hopeful I can repair my HR215HXA that I've had no problems with until yesterday. I mowed. Put mower away. Started mower again. It ran out of gas. I walked to the garage to get the gas can and when I got back to the mower there was a puddle of oil below the mower! :frown: Not a drip, but nearly all of the oil was on the concrete! Pushed it back to the garage, power washed the underside and its been sitting since. Where in the world do I begin? I bought this mower used 20 years ago and have had absolutely no problems. This is not a leak, but a flat out flood of oil.

Any help at all would certainly be appreciated.

Rotate the engine by hand.
If it turns over freely and smoothly ( allowing for valves opening & compression) then chances are you have done in the lower oil seal.
Fold the handle bars down then flip the mower up on the back wheels.
Remove the blades and brake disc if it has one then have a real hard look at the shaft.
There is a rubber seal in the cases and that is all that keeps the oil in the crankcases.
Fix should be about $ 5.00 to $ 10.00 for a seal plus new oil.
bits of stringy crud , wire etc end up eating out the seal.

If it is the seal, you must remove the Roto-Stop (blade clutch) and blades, then pull the engine off the mower deck. When inverted, you can inspect the bottom, oil pan and seal area. I do not think you have to pull the pan off to replace the seal. The shop manual shows a special tool is needed to drive/seat the seal properly.

If you are going to attempt this level of repair, I'd urge you to get a factory shop manual and save yourself a LOT of grief:

Ah, the listings only have "HR215" and don't include the "HXA"...anyway, you want this manual:

If all the oil is under the mower yes the only place is the bottom seal
If the oil is on top of the mower base then it can be coming from anywhere in the engine.
Does the oil smell like petrol and feel thin ?

All underneath. Not a drop on the top of the deck. As for the oil, it all drained out and I didn't get a close look at it. Thank you very much for the help.

I'm guessing it is the lower oil seal. Forgive my ignorance, but a parts search did not turn up anything by the name of lower oil seal. Is this the part that I'm looking for 91201-ZG9-U71? Again, it is an HR215HXA. Thank you for the assistance.

Folks,

Good morning. I've attached a couple of pics that would suggest to me that the oil is coming from somewhere other than the lower seal. I am assuming that the blue seal that is visible in one of the attached pics is the lower oil seal. I straddled the mower across a couple of chairs and had my wife pour some oil in the filler tube while I watched and the oil did not come from around the shaft. Rather it was dripping around the top of the roto-stop (brake?). What's next? Do I need to remove the brake to get a better look at where the oil may be originating? If not the lower seal, can I expect the news to be much worse?
