How important is color?

i do not really care to much about the color of the mower because I want reliability. My partner however does not want an "ugly" mower... what ever that means... how important is color when you pick out a mower?

With most 'mowers' being made by one or two places, about the only differance from one to the next is color and the various different names they stick on them... You are going to have to really look close at what you are buying and justify the term "reliability" to yourself...

color is fun to look at, so pick a color that you like looking at as you may be looking at it not working at times and the only joy you will have then is ...how 'good' it looks ...:smile:KennyV

I like things that are colorful still I would not care what color the mower is as long is it is not orange. I do not know what it is about the color orange... it just freaks me out.

I like oranges and Kubotas happily are orange... And I LOVE my Kubota L4200 Tractor AND my Kubota powered ZTR mower (but it's yellow) ...:smile:KennyV

How important is color? Would you want a pink riding mower? I know I wouldn't. Since I'm working the earth when I'm out there, John Deere green or brown is the best.

Color certanly dosen't affect the quality of the mower( as some people seem to think ). Bit I like my orange Gravely.

Color is not at all important to me but I'm one of those "form follows function" guys. You may consider a lighter color a little cooler (temperature) on a hot bright summer day. Other than that, I think you should be the one to make the mower purchase decision and let your partner paint the house:eek: or decorate the living room.

Ah, I can see why having a lighter color would be good when it come to the very hot days so you would not attract so much heat. Very practical thinking there.

I am a firm believer that color has nothing to really do with quality of a mower, I mean worse case scenario, you could always repaint it a color you want.

To me color is not important at all. The first thing I look for is value in the piece of equipment. The second thing I look for is value with respect to the purchase price.

i dont know what it is but i find most people love red mowers ..You can take 2 of the same mowers one red one green and put them side by side for sale and the red one always gos first ..I have also put older ones out that where red and they sell quick ...why i do not know colour inst a big deal to me

Interesting question. Why not have fun and choose the color you want?

As to me, I think green or orange would be good. I don't like red. Then although I may pick blue for a car, I'm not keen on doing that for a mower :)

I know it's silly, but color is quite important to me. I got a very good deal at the end of the season once on a mower that was bright orange. It just looked awful because it didn't match the color of my house, which is purple, at all! Had some left over housepaint and I guess you know the rest....

This is an interesting topic that i never really thought about before. I've never chosen a mower based on color but if I could do so it would always be purple, my favorite! For those who have painted a mower themselves - tell me more. Don't you need special paint?

Purple house, orange mower, where's the problem?

Mine is a bright orange and my husband and I chose it together. I'd say whoever does the most mowing should have the final say but, in truth, the colour was of secondary importance.

I love the mower painting idea! I have no problem with doing the yard work and mowing the lawn, except that my wife will not let me hear the end of the color of mower we bought. She was dead set on a green one. We got the red one that was $200 less. Automotive paint is the answer!

I LOVE the mower painting idea! It could be a whole new marketing niche to paint mowers and other gardening tools in "fun" or "designer" colors. I really think you're on to something, Harriet!

My friend's husband specifically bought a yellow colored riding mower. He did this, believe it or not, not because it was the best brand, or was reliable or anything practical. He did it so when he left it in the car port at the side of the house, everyone passing would see that he had a riding mower. Weird if as me. :confused2:

Not to put the damper on the color thing because to me color isn't an issue. I don't know about the other parts of the country but lawn mowers tend to come up missing here and get sold as parts (if you know what I mean) so the less attention to yourself and equipment the better.

Color isn't the priority in buying a lawn mower but like anything else, it's nice to have something that is pleasing to your eye. I love green ones. Maybe it's because they are bright and hopefully match the lawn color.

Well, color to me is not really that important, given that what matters most is the functionality and efficiency. Nonetheless, come to think of it, a really bright colored mower does not seem to fit. I had rather choose a darker shade.

I read this and pictured Paris Hilton driving around on a hot pink mower(not actually mowing) with her hot pink chihuahua in tow. Color pays no mind to me, quality and reliability do however!

Not important as long as it is Green and Yellow.

In our world as long as it works, I don't care what color it is. It is not about fashion with a mower but reliability and dependability, or at least it is to me.

Color is not really important but again you have to go for something that blends with the grass or better still, pleases the eye. I would go for a light shade.

I've recently relocated to San Diego in Southern Cal, and the people here are more image conscious than anywhere I ever lived. I would imagine color would be quite important here!

#33

That is an interesting observation. Have you looked around to note what color they prefer for their mowers? I would go for nothing less than green.

Not a putdown, but that sounds like California...gotta keep up with the Joneses next door. I think the ulitimate would be a custom painted mower that matches your car. Back about 1988, before I purchased my first garden tractor, a Deere 318, I saw one with custom painted murals on the hook and side panels. After buying mine, I priced having the same type of painting done...once I found the cost, I said "heck no" because I would have been so worried about the murals getting scratched up.

The majority of my push mowers have been silver grey (Craftsman and Husqvarna) dark green (Craftsman and Yard Man) and I recently purchased a black one (Brute), To me, a push mower color is not important, I care more about the finish being durable and not rusting.

Don't most brands stick with a similar line of colors? John Deere is green, Scotts is orange, Cub Cadet is yellow, Troy-built is red, etc. It seems to me that the brand name, reliability, maintenance, etc. are a lot more important that the color.

I have never liked the color yellow, but I sure do Love my Hustler mower!! (my favorite color has always been red)

My first push mower was a Monkey Ward, it was yellow, I didn't take good care of it so it died and early, rusty demise. Wish now I had kept it, maight have been a collectors item by now (1973)

If you buy by color alone, you are really limiting what you buy. Color has nothing at all to do with quality.

I think if you pick the right color Green for example you have a wide range to choose from.

If you let color alone guide you... you may find yourself regretting that you didn't approach it 'color blind'...
Brand loyalty has betrayed many consumers in recent years.
Name brands have been swapped around as if they had no value... :smile:KennyV

I'm starting to come across disappointed Newer John Deere and Cub Cadet owners.. the name brands are slipping in quality. You do have to look closely at what is under the color anymore... :smile:KennyV

Kenny, I work for a living and you can be sure when I buy something like the X749, 110tlb with Laurin cab, 4520 cab tractor I do alot of research and test drives. There are other benefits to sticking with what you know from past experiences works. Further I get good discounts from my dealer because I am a frequent customer. Here is a pic of my oldest Deere (820) that I presently own it is 36 years old. Shown with the new 4520.

Good looking tractors..
Got to love a cabbed tractor. I do have an older open station tractor.
Like your scenery... may take you a while to flatten out those rolling hills behind you...

Always a plus with good relations with your dealer. :smile:KennyV
