Is there a way to advance the hour meter when replacing a damaged one with a new one. I tried leaving the ignition key in the on position with the engine off but this did nothing. The dealer didn't think it could be done. Can it??

With the key on it should advance the hours. You could just run a jumper wire from the battery

As mentioned in my original post, with the key on, the hour meter does not advance. Can you be more specific abut how to run a jumper wire? Which battery to which terminal on the hour meter? Is there any chance of frying the hour meter in doing this?

I have a scag turf tiger. My hour meter only advances when the pto is on (blades rotating).

I have a 2012 TT and mine don't advance even with the blades rotating. A year and a half mowing all day every Saturday in season, its showing about 20 hours.

You need to either replace the hourmeter or a wiring problem exists on your machine. Without a functioning hourmeter you have no idea when scheduled maintenance comes due. Scag had a problem with a particular hourmeter vendor and changed vendors.

When I repower a machine or just replace the hourmeter, I mark the former machine time on the area near the hourmeter, for example, on my machine the hourmeter display would only show correct time when I pushed on a part of the face of the hourmeter. I replaced the hourmeter and marked the frame with " 350 +" next to the hourmeter.
I have also wired that hourmeter to a separate 12 volt battery and connected a low amp output charger to the battery as the hourmeter time advanced to the point where I wanted it to be. Bear in mind that it takes 7 full days to put 168 hours on an hourmeter, so this process can take some time during which you need to monitor the time when it gets close to the specific hours that you want indicated on the meter.

Never had a hour meter apart but I have had some motorcycle speedometers apart. First of all they make them sealed units. What I did was very carefully ground off the metal ring that holds the lens on. Once this is done they will come apart. When they are apart you can set the numbers to what ever you want. When I put them together I used silver tape in place of the metal ring and they look as good as new. I really don't know if hour meters and motorcycle speedometers are made the same so if you have a old hour meter try it on that first.

I know I need to do that. It just seems there is never enough time to leave it at the shop long enough to get it checked out.

I like your method of putting the correct number of hours back on a new hour meter.
