I think there are also mowers that can do the job even on uneven lawn. When I was in high-school our utility men uses mowers that has nylon blades, they only like sway left to right and steps forward until they finish the whole school yard. Not really sure though if this works with uneven lawns.

No the Landscape doesn't have to be flat to operate a mower. A 21" push mower can about mow any terrain you can find, but it's very time consuming. Most riding mowers made today will have what's called a Floating Deck equipped with Anti-Scalping rollers that can compensate for most mowing conditions or irregularity's in a lawn.

I think by your description of what the utility guys are using, that would be a weed trimmer or string trimmer. They can be fitted with nylon blades but they can be costly, the string or nylon cord is a lot cheaper to use.

The flatter or more uniform the surface is, the easier and faster you can mow that space... preparing the surface before planting is always the best approach, but with "top dressing" an existing lawn, you can over years get it very smooth and easier to manage... occasionally rolling with a heavy roller will help ... BUT if you do that remember that it will also compact the soil, to offset the compaction, follow up with aeration, core aeration, being the best... :smile:KennyV
