Hello, I'm new and I have a problem with my mower

Hello, I recently aquired a Cub Cadet GT 2544 which was doing well. A few days ago, after mowing for about 30 minutes, it just died. When trying to start it again, it was sluggish, and when it did start, it just kept backfiring and would not run smooth or keep running. I removed the battery, and since it was 2008 dated, I replaced the battery, and thinking it may be a fuel filter issue (as it seemed it wasn't getting enough gas) I replaced the fuel filter. Also, when trying to start it, it would start better with the choke pushed in and the throttle on fast.....it would not start with the choke pulled out. Can anyone tell me why it is back firing or where to go next to try to diagnose the problem? Thank you.

if you get it started, when it runs do you have to run it on half choke? if so your carb needs to be cleaned. also you gas cap might be plugged. try to blow through the hole on the top of the cap. oh, and welcome to the forum! its a great place to learn about small engines and stuff like that.

It doesn't want to stay running at all if the choke is pulled out. I will check the gas cap. Thank you for the warm welcome.

Try blowing out the gas line into the gas tank. Sometimes debris will get in the tank and clog it up.

We need at least the engine's model numbers off of the engine to be of much help.

Try and run it without the air filter on it.

Don't try cutting grass with out the filter in place

(( cowboy up and get over it ))

It maybe backfiring because its too lean, not getting much fuel...! clean the carb or have it cleaned then clean out the tank refill with new fuel and check the fuel lines make sure the carb is getting fuel, then see if it will start, if not come back here with engine/type numbers.
