It is mowing season and I am having problems with my 2021 Gravely Pro-Turn 660 w/Kawasaki FX1000V engine. I am mowing my pastures (15" -20" tall grass) and the mower cuts thru the fields very easily and does not bog down. When I pulled back on the control arms to slow the speed, the engine back-fires and stops. The same thing occurs mowing hills. Mowing up the hill is effortless, but controlling the down hill descent speed with the control arms, engine back fires and stops... Hopefully someone has some insight on this issue. I look forward to all your comments... thank you. (new gas, air filter and engine oil, 65hrs on mower)

Hi Vmax1! Did you ever figure this out? I am having the exact same problem as you described. Exactly the same!!!!
 
Being that the motion and attitude (pitch) of the machine is a factor suggests that there is moisture (water) and debris floating back and forth in the bottom of the fuel tank. Fuel pickup tubes do not always reach the very bottom of the fuel tank(s)

The only way to remove this stuff is disassemble the machine and remove the fuel tank and flush it out and let it fully dry in the sun for a couple of days.

Most of this problem likely resulted in just one or two refueling(s) from a dirty fuel can in the past, so there is likely dirt and grass clipping hiding in the tank as well.

A vast majority of engine running problems like this begin at/in the fuel tank, but people often work backwards starting at the carburetor, fuel pump, filter and fuel lines.
 
Auto Doc's, VMAX1 did mention going down hill. However, it has nothing to do with the tilt going down hill. It's because the control arms are being pulled back to control the speed. It has nothing to do with water in the fuel. This is an immediate reaction every single pull back on the control arms, whether it's a fast pull back or a very slow pull back. Water in the tank would cause issues that were more sporadic and delayed due to the travel time from the tank pick up tube all the way to the combustion chamber.

The control arms (handles) only link to the directional drive hydraulic motors with the exception of when they are placed in the neutral position. They have no physical or electrical link/ connection to the engine. This is why I speculated on this possibly being water or debris in the fuel tank(s) type of issue.
 
I agree that there is no connection between the arms and the engine, that is why this is so puzzling. Here is another thing to consider. Once the mower eases into a complete stop, I can quickly jerk back on the control arms to go backwards and it doesn't stall.
Again, if there was water, debris, etc., there would be a delay for the stall. There would not be an immediate stall because of fuel still in the hoses and filter. I can completely clamp off the pick up hoses and it will still run just fine for 45+ seconds.
This stalling issue I have it immediate.
