My jd 245 has a hood that pretty much encases the whole engine- would this not make the engine run a lot hotter? Here in tx we have some really hot weather and am considering removing the hood just to make it run cooler---am i thinking straight? Jim--------[air cooled kawasaki 20hp]

Don't know for sure about that particular model, but usually they have designed the hood and side pannels (if it has sides) to direct the air flow where it needs to go for cooling. Better to make sure all the engine fins etc. are clean and air can flow. Keep good oil in the engine.

BKBrown is right... most designs are to assist air flow...

You can not get rid of the heat too fast in the middle of summer... air cooled engines need all the help they can get... That is one of the reasons I use synthetic oil. KennyV

Leave the hood on because it is designed to help with the airflow around the engine...and one thing you can do is mow late in the evening or at night when the air is cooler. My JD 4210 is a diesel and it puts out a LOT of engine heat, which roasts my feet when the temp is over 90. I have installed a pair of clear fog lights on the grille guard to supplement the OEM headlights and really enjoy mowing at night. I surf the web with my Blackberry while mowing and its more fun than sitting inside and watching tv. Cool, huh? Pun intended.
