Gas Capacity

New to the Forum. Just bought a new Hrx217Hza. Like how the mower performs but seems like small gas tank. How full does everyone fill the tank. According to manual its says to bottom of red insert. I graduated from an Ariens which I coulld mow the whole lawn with (About 1 and 30 minutes worth). The Honda lasted about 45 minutes. Not big on refilling the tank every 45 minutes!! :frown:

Yes you are supposed to go to the insert, but I go a little higher. I can get around 1 hour 30 mins of mowing on 1 tank. The other day I did 2 lawns on one tank, which I can do fairly often. I looked online and a website said the total acreage (2 yards combined) was 0.56 acres.

Was your grass very tall?

This begs the question, and I apologize in advance if this has been discussed elsewhere, but is there an extended, separate gas tank that can be added to the HRX or other walk behind mower not unlike what you see for a generator? Not a five gallon size, but smaller that can work in conjunction to the attached tank.

We may have something here!

Never seen or heard of any external tanks for the HRX. I know Honda has never offered one, and I don't think there's ever been any aftermarket ones either.

Part of the problem in offering one is it would modify the fuel system, which is technically part of the emissions system, and per EPA rules, you can't do that without re-certifying the engine's emissions levels with the changes; this requires some costly independent lab time ($$$). That's why Honda hasn't done it, and why it's unlikely some other company will offer such a device.

In reference "How tall was the grass" It was fairly moderate 3-4 inches. What is the danger in filling it all the way up? Does anyone know? Thanks in advance for the input. By the way just mowed again yesterday, it's does an awesome job!!!

I would say just the possibility of overflowing it. :confused2:

One thing I did like on an Exmark mower I demoed was the remote one gallon fuel tank. But for me the Honda's tank still lasts a long time.

The typical safety hazards of spilled fuel, of course, as well as the evaporative emissions, which the EPA is working hard to reduce.

I say fill it up to the cap..... I took out that red insert ages ago and I fill it to to the very top

As to an extended gas tank, I knew this was "over the top" but nonetheless it is of interest for those who wish to walk non-stop for more than an hour and half. Yes, I'm aware to the emissions this can cause if it's not done right. Certain manufacturers of the external fuel tanks for generators i.e. Honda eu3000is go to great lengths to make sure this is correct.

Nevertheless, I was hoping for a visit to the Patent Office should this idea have traction...

I fill mine mostly to the top. If you fill up then wiggle the mower it seems the fuel level lowers. Possible air pocket?

Yes I notice the same thing.
