I would start by checking and adjusting the valve clearances. This service manual should help.

I'd start by cleaning the carb first then move on to the valves. Sounds like the carb has issues.

These Kolher engines are much more supseptible to valves out of adjustment than carb problems. Plus checking the valves first is much easier and cheaper that pulling the carb and cleaning/rebuilding.

Yep it sounds like they are stuck, or not opening properly.

Sounds like a valve problem....not uncommon with Kohler. Time to tear her down!

it didn't fix the problem cleaning the carb. and how do you check valves adjustment and what is the clearance set on them (need to by Friday)

When I seen adjust valves on the Kohler cv engine I though they were non-adjustable. So I went to the service manual and seen I was right and wrong. It looks like that engine came both ways non-adjustable and adjustable.

Yeah, I have seen both. Same with the SmartSpark....

Have you looked at the manual I posted. Section 11 explains how to adjust the valves.
