Hi There: I'm a new user hoping I can find a B&S expert to solve my problem. B&S and the parts retailers sure can't. I have a 2005 John Deere L120 with a B&S engine 407777-0131-E1, Date code 050221YG. Late last summer I stupidly got my battery charger clamps on top of the running motor and destroyed the fan. I thought, no problem, I can replace it. There are only 2 fan options: 791236 & 790698. Both are too tall and the cover will not install on the engine without bearing on the fan. When I measure the height of the old fan from the flat portion of the base to the top ring I get about 1 5/8 inches. The 790698 measures 2 inches so it is 3/8" taller and the 791236 was even taller. I am about resigned to removing the part of the cover that will contact the fan although I worry about whether that will affect the air flow for engine cooling. I will greatly appreciate any input.

Interesting.
When J D specify a part that is different from the general production run of an engine it usually gets a JD number and is shown n the JD parts list.
Fan is not there just checked

My copy of the 407777 parts list shows 4 fans and yours should be 790698 used between date codes 04071900 and 06103000
My next stop would be the friendly JD dealer and by prefference with whatever is left of your old fan

I have made the assumption that you have fitted the fans properly with he cut outs for the magnets over the magnets .

There was actually 3 different fans used on that engine the before 04, between 04-06 and after 06. I am wondering if your didn't use the before 04 version which unfortunately has been discontinued.

I am finding that the 798760 doesn't show as a valid part number

I suggest checking local small engine repair shops for a salvage fan. Someone on forum may have one.

I appreciate all your suggestions. What you don't realize is that I'm 81 years old and live in a remote rural area of Arizona. The nearest John Deere dealer is more than 2 hours away and won't have the items on the shelf to compare anyhow. The on line parts sellers don't have access to physical parts so no measuring is possible. I'm shopping for a used cover on ebay but since the only way I can communicate with a seller is through ebay's email system it's a tedious process. I have enough left of the broken fan to compare heights and mine is definitely 3/8" or more shorter. When I look for the other 2 numbers suggested I don't come up with anything. Also, the fan is bolted to the flywheel with 2 torx head bolts. It will only install in 2 positions 180 degrees different and the current fan models are constructed so that there are slots for the magnets on both sides. If I can find a used cover that was installed with one of the newer fans I think it will solve my problem. I have attached a photo of part of my broken fan next to790698. The other one 791236 is even taller but with the top reinforcing rings lined up you can clearly see how much taller the new one is. It looks to me like a taller cover is my only option.

Congeatulations.
If I am still mowing at 81 I will be very thankful, let alone pulling the mower apart.
IF there is space between the motor & hood I would go for the current fan & a new blower housing.
OR chasing up DJ's head office customer service
