Hi Everybody, I am new here. I have a sears Craftsman 30 inch 420cc riding mower. It starts when the carb is primed but then as it reaches normal idle it dies. Screwed into the bowl of the carburator is a brass piece that has wires leading to it. I am wondering if it may be the culprit? Please let me know your thoughts.

my instinct tells me you need to take it to a mechanic. Any gasoline engine needs 3 things to run. The first step in any solution is to figure which of those three things is missing. The first step comes before starting to take things apart or guessing what part might be the culprit.

My guess is that fuel is missing. That can be a bad fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or power to the cutoff solenoid if that is what your carb has. It can also be a plugged needle valve, or air or fuel jet.

Your main jet is clogged
When you prime you flood the carb so it gets enough fuel to start but it is not getting enough to run
The solenoid simply shoves a spring loaded bung into the feed tube for the main jet when the mower is turned off
When the key is on it should be energised and the bung pulled back .
Instructions for cleaning your carburettor is found at outdoor power info
