mower was brought to me by a friend and said it wouldn't start, he had purchased and installed a new ignition switch...still wouldn't start or even turn over. After checking a few things I found a blown fuse, continuity checked the switches, solenoid and wiring and all checked good... turn the ign. sw. to start and it instantly blows the 15 amp fuse. The mower is a 01996 Scott's brand 17hp/42in., i'm at a lose with this particular elec. problem! (Checked the common ground also):confused2:

Thanx,

Start at the "New" switch... it 'May' be the Wrong switch... there is more than one wiring layout But the plug that connects to them is the same... :smile:KennyV

Definitely sounds like the new switch.

Strangely enough I had a client come in just yesterday with a blown magneto from a Briggs & Stratton powered rider... he said "This (Magneto)went faulty after I replaced the ignition switch..." he then went on to tell me "This is the third one I've bought and I cant understand what is causing them to blow... This didn't happen before I changed the switch?" :mur:

Kenny is right on this and it is something I have ran across it in my repair shop. Just because it plugs in doesn't mean its the right switch. I find what happens is someone is trying to save money and just buying parts from a parts dealer or shop that don't know what they are selling you. You may pay more for your parts from a good dealer but as I see it you will save if you only have to do the job once. I am seeing this all the time on here that no one agrees with me on this so just keep trying your no good parts out to spend 20 dollars to save 20 cents.
