I purchased a new PE-225 over the weekend. I've read reviews complaining about the guard clogging with dirt etc. Is it possible to change the guard out with one of the metal guards that come standard on the higher end edgers? Does anyone have personal experience with the edger clogging?

Yes I cut it long time ago. Cut off the piece on the blade side leave the part on the top of blade and on shaft side. I used a small 3" cut off tool to do mine but its cheap plastic a steak knife would probably cut it lol best 10 mins you'll ever spend I've out 100's of hours on mine since I cut it I have never had problems with debris flying wrong or any other issues. Other thing I did was remove the mud flap. That thing made tall edges such a hassle

I have this edger, and I can say that if you are just edging along the street/sidewalk, it will do a nice job. The time it starts to struggle is if you are edging mulch beds, and the dirt is a bit wet, it will clog.
