Hi guys, Great forum here. I joined because I'm having trouble locating a suitable replacement for a discontinued part that I need.

I have an OLD Gilson snowblower from the mid-60's. This blower has been handed down three generations in my family! It's an amazing machine that has been running great until about a week ago. After partially tearing the engine down I discovered the bottom valve cap on one of the valve springs split in two pieces. The part is (I believe) discontinued.

First off let me start by saying that I have not been able to find my specific engine model on any parts-diagram websites. The Model on the engine badge is H60-15152E. The closest model I can find to match is H60-15152F. Does anyone know if these are compatible engines? I can't find a reference to the E model anywhere.

Secondly, the parts listed on the F model are listed everywhere as discontinued. I know there must be a suitable part from some other small engine out there that would work for this... even if it would require some modification to make it work.

Does anyone here have any advice for me? I have attached a picture of the broken valve cap.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!
Pat

http://www.jackssmallengines.com/Jacks-Parts-Lookup/Model-Diagram/tecumseh/113576/12660 scroll down to item 149 valve spring cap.

You said you needed lower valve spring cap, still searching, there are no dumb questions that are asked only the ones not asked.

Hi Thanks.. however, I don't think that part will work. If you look at the picture I posted of the broken bottom cap (keeper or whatever you want to call it), it has a raised-up center. If you look at the diagram you referred me to, you'll see the bottom and top caps are different. The one you suggest is flat. I think that center part is important because of the valve spring retaining pin which is ITEM #10 on this diagram for the H60-15152F.

Just some background, I found somewhere else in another forum an old thread and someone suggested getting the bottom cap from that same diagram you posted... which is item #151. I ordered this part(Tecumseh part#32581)... the center hole on this part was way too small of a diameter and there was no way to modify it to make it work.

Just curious... how did you come to the conclusion to suggest that part? Like I said, there must be a part that will be a good substitute and I'm trying to figure out how to even find it... Is there somewhere that I could look up generic valve caps that have similar measurements? Sorry if that's a real dumb question.. I'm no pro and I'm trying to figure this all out using my limited knowledge of small engines. Thanks for your help!

I'm not a smart---, but will you double check that engine number. I can't find any engine with a spec number 15152. On what site did you get the part number and be told it was no long available? If I get a chance tomorrow I'll check my shop parts manuals tomorrow. Please post the Gilson model number.

LOL.. No offense taken! I had to re-check it a few times myself because I've had the same problems... That IS the correct # on the engine. Here is a picture of the engine stamp and S/N
valve3.jpg

As for the Gilson model# the plate must have fallen off at some point in the last 40 years. I've tried identifying it on this really cool vintage Gilson webpage
http://www.gilsonsnowblowers.com/
but none of the models he shows pictures of look like mine.. The best I can tell is that it's from the mid 1960's due to a few of the descriptions of different models from those years.

The link I posted in my previous post at jacksmallengines.com lists it as discontinued and my local small engine shop said the same thing in their system as well... Thanks for your assistance, Rivets!

How... Did... you... find... that????!!

I have been looking on ebay for two weeks... I guess the better question is.. how did I miss it? I just ordered it. Man, I really hope this is the actual part I need! A million thanks, Mechanic Mark!

The part on the other page is listed at $9999.99.. ha! I'm guessing that is because it's out of stock as well, but as a backup plan I will contact them tomorrow anyway. If the price is right it couldn't hurt to have a spare.

The man you are looking for is Randy .
I think his web shop is called Randys Chainsaws or some thing like that.
He is a massive and I mean massive chainsaw breaker and no matter what obscure part I have needed or a customer he has always found some thing that will fit

Thanks Bertsmobile1. I'll keep that in mind if the part I ordered does not fit the bill.
