Best I saw was PE. I asked the AI(boo) and they said compatible with HPDE. Got a recommendation? I haven't heard back if my buddy has one yet.

PE is polyethylene. NOT what you want for an HDPE tank. That is high density polyethylene. Heard you CAN use LDPE or low density polyethylene ON HDPE tanks. Just match the tank material TO your rod. Easy pze.
 
I found HPDE sticks. First I see if buddy has a welder, if not I decide if I want to fix. Deeper searches found a new tank under $100. Not original part number, but part number listed as official replacement. If I weld, I will use HDPE. Thanks again.
 
So, I replaced the fuel tank, since I got one free. The original had a hole over the spark plug, so I made a heat shield to protect the tank more in that area. I should be able to change the plug without pulling the tank. Fired it up, tweaked the spring on the governor arm, lubed pivots etc. I got it running reasonably solid near 3600 RPM. My voltmeter reads 85 or so volts. I tweaked some more, and got voltage to 115-120. I hooded up a sawzall and my 1/2 impact, rated for 13.5 amps between them, and ran both. RPM and voltage stable. My RPM is reading about 4200. My VOM doesn't do Hz, but I figure that's 70Hz. I've run this generator for a number of storms, and my computer and refrigerator haven't had a problem.

Do I need to worry about it? Thanks in advance for advice.
 
It is best to have a multi-meter or a Kill-o-Watt plug-in that can read Hertz. I usually adjust RPM until I read 61.5 Hertz without a load. Only using RPM is a very basic setting.

Some early generators do not provide a full 120V until a load is applied, my 1980's Coleman 4kw is like that.

Don't assume the generator is not hurting anything electronic just because they power up. running at the wrong frequency is a 'slow death' to most electronics, especially digital displays.

My advice is to use this early design generator for basic incandescent bulb lighting and work sight tools.
 
I'm going to test with a meter that reads Hertz, I have one, but it's not reliable. How about refrigeration? That's my main concern during hurricane season. I ordered a kill o watt meter.

Testing with 16 amp load, voltage was stable at 120.

16 Amps multiplied by 120 Volts equals what? 1920 Watts of load.

Is that 16 Amps at compressor startup or steady after the refrigerator is running for a couple of minutes?
 
No compressor in that 16 amps, that's 2 power tools rated draws. I wanted to see what happened to voltage/RPM when I put on an electrical load. It's a saw and a 1/2" impact driver. Steady running.
 
I am referring to the refrigerator compressor (if that was used). You only said tested with a 16-amp load.

With power tools, they will pull a little more amperage when put to work, but nothing dramatic.
