I looked at a John Deere 425 this morning. It has the FD620D engine. The serial number tag is gone from the mower so I can't date the mower. I'm reluctant to buy it until I'm sure the engine has steel cams, which I believe are post-1998. The mower has 1435 hours on it.
I didn't know where on the engine to look for the engine serial number.
on the air cleaner cover there is tag labeled "Important Engine Information" which lists the "Family ID", the engine displacement, and "Date of mfg. 0300".
