After opening the unit I tried moving the shifter plate by hand,it did move but one of the ball bearings came out from under the plate, should it and how many bearings should there be ? I see two including the one that rolled out.

they are called detent balls, which lock the shifter in each gear.

Why two, I don't remember there being to two detents in there. To the OP, the detent goes in last, after the tranny is reassembled. Ball, spring, then set screw, which you tighten until the shifter is hard to move, then back off one half turn.

Thanks for the help guys, yes it is number three the detent balls and there is two of them. After had first put the belt on my grandson cut a 50' strip but it was moving slow so I told him I probably needed to adjust the clutch.I don't know if he slammed it into gear or it just happened but then it would go any where. I did the clutch adjustment but then it wouldn't shift gears. So I took the axle out and the on thing I noticed was one of the balls out of place. I'm going to clean it up,put in some 00 grease and give her a try. Thanks for the detent adjustment tip I was wondering exactly how much tension to put on it. I'll let you guys know how it works out.
