Hello,
I have a Cub Cadet SR621 that I purchased on craigslist recently and it had a small crack in the front axle cover. It worked fine for about a month but then the front axle cover started cracking further (Part number: 731-1836). My first thought was, "No biggie, I don't need it to be pretty, just functional.
Much to my surprise, while mowing the other day the front of my deck dropped flat on the ground! It appears that this front axle cover isn't just a cover, but it is the part that holds the front axle to the main body of the mower! (The axle passes through the plastic cover which is bolted to the body. Why a designer would use brittle plastic (Or any plastic for that matter) for such a part is beyond me.
It didn't break where the axle passes through, but where the bolts are that mount it to the deck.
I am bit leery of paying $90 bucks for a crappy plastic part that might break again (I only paid $100 for the mower.) and I am wondering if anyone knows of an after market part for this application or has some tips on possibly making my own. Again, I don't care if it looks pretty, just so long as it works.
(For the record, I am NOT that handy of a guy, but can usually do almost anything if provided instructions/guidance)
Any help or tips anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
