Word-of-mouth is the best (Once you get some customers). If you don't have any yet, that won't work, so I would suggest making high-quality flyers. If someone gets 2 flyers they will pick the one that looks the most professional...make that yours. Also, put up a few yard signs.
Think advertising, try business cards for doors, try (VistaPrint.com) you can get cards for FREE. Try Magnetic signs with the name of your business and phone number for your vehicle. Set up your pricing and billing and be realistic. Once you get a few customers show up prepared to do the job your client wants, do a good job on there lawns and as lawn mower fanatic says word of mouth will do the rest.

If you have a friend that does lawn care talk to him about doing yards he does not want. I have a few guys that I give yards to I don't want and they give me yards.
It works out good as I do nice yards with a push mower and they will cut anything.
Like has been said already word of mouth is the best.

If you have welcome wagon near you give them a call.
What they do is when you buy a new home they come visit you with info about the area. They give the home owner your flyer then give you a list with address and phone # so you can make a follow up call.
Something else you may want to try is the Farm and Garden in the Services Section on Craigslist and run an ad, a lot start up businesses run ads there and get clients.
Advertise on your vehicle. And your other vehicle. And anyone else that will let you put a door magnet on. Up until recently, that is how I always found someone. Word of mouth will take over once you begin to provide quality service.
I don't know what you drive, but try to look at it from a customer's perspective. If you drive a H2 or new crew diesel and a 16' enclosed, I know I will be paying alot for my yard for you to get around in that, no matter the quality. And if you drive a 1980 Chevy with rusted fenders so I can see THROUGH the bed to the other side, I will figure my yard will be hacked.
Neat and clean....just like someone wants their yard.
Maintain the quality of service and you will retain the customer.
