Broken spring

Can anyone tell me what this spring goes to on my MTD Lawnman? I found the spring when I took the battery out. It is just in front of the battery housing. Does it by chance have anything to do with the transmission? I just recently aquired the mower and it has a transmission problem. That would be super if it turned out to be nothing more than a broken spring.
The mower is model # 13A772G755
