broken pulley

i have a craftsman ride on. do i need to take the deck off to repair a broken pulley.
i was cutting the grass and it starting smoking like a smoke stack. the belt is
mostl likly no good either.

Help

may not be necessary, but may be easier to replace depending on which belt, and which pulley, and can vary by what mower, and deck.

Never tried it with the deck on. I don't know why it couldn't done with the deck on but as I see it the job would be so much easier and faster by removing the deck. Not that bad of a job to remove the deck. Also by removing the deck you can check all the other pulleys and gives you a good opportunity to give it a good cleaning and repaint it if need be.

I would remove the deck. Only takes a couple mins.
