I inherited a MTD Yardman mower with an 18.5 HP Briggs & Stratton engine, Model 31N707, Type 0301 B2, that had it's starter motor removed. I would like to order a replacement starter but can't determine if I need a 14 or 16 tooth drive gear on it. The Briggs parts manual says that engine uses a P/N 693551 starter, which has been changed to P/N 593934, but I can't tell from what I read on-line how many tooth gears those starters come with. Any of you guys know what I need? Also, are after market starters reliable or should I throw the big bucks of an OEM starter?

Thanks for the help,

Roger B

OOPS!!! It looks like I should have posted this on the Briggs sub-forum.. Sorry about that.. I'd move it if I knew how, but then I couldn't even figure out how to edit it.. If Admin can move it to the proper location, please do and accept my apologies for screwing things up.. Geez, Newbies...

Here's a few places to check, the starter you order with the correct P/N should have the proper pinion gear for your engines ring gear. as you research there is a great difference in price, if you plan to keep the mower for a long period of time , I would opt for a starter of O.E.M. quality, BUT I've had satisfaction with SOME ...... (el-cheapo parts) too.. ... guess it depends on how deep your money pocket is . Best of luck .......Boobala

You might try dropping bu one of your local mower repair shops and ask them what the tooth count is on the starter motor or maybe call the B&S help line and ask them. They SHOULD know the answer. ;-)

Boobala & Tom,

Thanks for the links and tips, I appreciate it.. What puzzled me are the comments left by others that bought replacement starters (from seemingly the same part numbers) that indicated they came with spur gears having a different number of teeth. I was hoping to avoid the same problem of ending up with the wrong one. It "looks" like what I want comes with 14 teeth, but as I don't have the original one, I can only guess. Others have indicated that calling Briggs doesn't often get the desired results.. I'll give it a go and see what that gets me..

Thanks again,

Roger B

Roger,
Looking over the links and the engine data that I could find I think you would be OK with getting a starter motor with a 14 tooth gear. Especially if you can get it locally so if for some unknown reasons it is wrong you can take it back.

Thanks again Tom,

As far as I can tell the starter motor with the old P/N - 693551, does have a 14 tooth spur gear. I'm going to try my luck and order on line.

The spur gears are replaceable & interchangable.
I get my starters from a reliable aftermarket supplier and they come with both gears in a plastic bag.
This reduces inventory costs.
The starters are the same, just the gears are different.
Mount the starter without the gear retainer and without a plug in the engine.
Pop your finger on the starter armature and with your thumb lift the gear up to engage with the flywheel.
turn the flywheel by hand and watch the teeth engagement.
If the gear jambs it is wrong.
If the gear pushes back on the armature hard all the time it is wrong
If the teeth only just touch it is wrong.
Retail the gears are only a couple of dollars each so no big cost.

Bert,

I ordered a B&S authorized replacement starter (comes in a B&S box!) - Gotta be the right one! . . . Right? . . . I'll find out soon, it's supposed to arrive tomorrow.

Thanks for the tips on how to determine if it has the correct spur gear. I appreciate it, I will follow your suggestions...
