I have a 3 year old craftsman riding mower with a 17.7HP Briggs and Stratton. Today I changed the oil, spark plugs, fuel filter and air filter. I started it up and mowed a streak about 100 feet when I experienced a sudden loss of power. I turned around and was heading back to the shop when heavy smoke started pouring from the engine. I immediately shut the engine off. As soon as I did there was a loud pop like a backfire. The smoke was coming from the base of the engine where it mounts to the mower. As I continued to look I noticed oil pouring from the bottom of the engine. Ether oil was running down the main shaft and collecting in the drive pulley. I could not tell exactly where the oil was coming from. Where do I start with this engine and does anyone know what I could bee getting in to?

Sounds to me like its time to remove the engine from the tractor, take apart and see what it needs for a overhaul??
I no longer wonder why people do not change their oil after all the folks that come on here with blown engines after an oil change. Did you happen to overfill the engine with oil?

The other thing it could be is that the carbs needle and seat or float failed and started filling the crankcase with fuel overfilling the crankcase.

You May have overfilled with oil & it is possable that the only damage is the seal on the crank was pushed out by the oil being whipped up with the crank and piston... You will not know untill you look.
This is not Necessarily going to be very bad or dificult to fix. Take a closer look and post back with what you find... :smile:KennyV
