I was trying to buy a 540 cc single cylinder Briggs, Came across a 33R877 motor. But right next to it on the OPEengines site was a 540 cc 33S877 with the word " Professional " in the title, and only $ 10 more . So I ordered one of the 33S877 because of that " Professional " word. I figured it would be more durable. Very misleading , For I found out within 5 hrs. of placing my order that the 33R motor is the better sturdier motor. Tried to change my order but was told , to late. So do any of the Briggs fans on here know what is the difference between the 33R877 and the 33S877 engine ? Thank you for any help in advance.

For the average person there is no different between them. And it looks like the 33R is being replaced with the 33S according to my distributor. So even if you had ordered the R version you may of received the S version anyway.

I did notice B&S won't tell us what the real difference is. My local shop only got, " It's just dressed up different " from the B&S rep. But I got a new S and it is not any different outwardly. Thats what scares me. I'm afraid something in the internals was cheapened or changed in a way that does not benefit the consumer. Like Always in the last 10 - 15 years.

And by Your "average person "comment tells me it is less durable now. So commercial landscapers can tell it is a soft typical consumer crap, I mean grade engine now. No ?

I will find out eventually. Because my 33R lasted me ( still running btw ) 11 - 13 mowing seasons over dutying the hell out it. So if this 33S is soft crap now I will find out. PS And our mowing seasons where I live are almost 7 months . Yes, you heard right, More than half the year !

According to the Briggs website it's supposed to have a longer engine life than the previous Intek models.

Thanks for the reply Scubcadet10 , I obsessed over it and checked part by major part in the parts breakdown of these two 540cc single cylinder engines ( 33R877 vs 33S877 ) 33S877 being the newer version . I hate the word " New " for the last 10 or 15 years because it usually means the corperation's bean counters are taking a nice feature away or making something cheaper and end result is the particular item having less reliability and / or shorter life span. Well, Heres what I found, The only major component " That I found " you may find more. But I found they share a different Connecting rod Part # The 33R using Con rod # 794122 , The 33S motor stating the con rod # 794571 . They are most likely interchangable . BUT the old con rod proving my point. IT ( 794122 ) has 2 oiling holes where it connects to the crank , Where the new con rod has no oiler holes. Now heres the KICKER, Briggs no longer has the crank # 596007 available. You must buy half the engine to get a new crank The very part this con rod lack of the oiling hole feature could ruin eventually causing major engine failure. And JUST not be worth fixing at that point. In other words, You need to buy a new engine. Pretty clever on the side of Briggs & Stratton. I rest my case

Oh, And I forgot, The newer engine 33S877 air cleaner cover it quicker to remove now. BUT, you better be familiar with it or you will break the new plastic fasteners.

I looked up a 33R877-0015-G1 and the 33S877-0015-G1 and both show the same crankshaft and connecting rod.

I niticed at least one of the 33R engines came with the 794122 con rod. The B series maybe ?
