I decided to buy an older toro model 20622 has a yamaha engine with a 3 speed trans and a blade brake. Included was a comlete second yamaha engine for parts and it only cost 125 total
Runs beautiful I think it needs a few little adjustments that I can do over time definitely needs a new blade and new drive wheels but overall I am very excited I don't know a single thing with this old yamaha engine anything I should know?
Nevermind the engine seized... no idea why oil is good gas is good it ran good then it started sputtering then seize... the guy I bought it from is going to come put the other engine on it and test that if that does work I'm getting my money back
I have a similar model. My dad bought it in the spring of 1985. It runs like a top had a few minor things repaired but it mows great! It uses a Suzuki 2 cycle engine.

So the 4hp engine that was on there bent a rod and wouldn't let the piston move.
He replaced it with the 5hp version he gave me for parts and it did the same thing took the whole engine apart cleanedit up and inspected it found out it has a metal cam and a oil pump very nice
He had used parts from the 4hp to fix the valves on the 5hp it took a while to adjust as he didn't have valve specs but got it running good now and I am excited to use it tomorrow.

I am going through it and am wondering what toro wheels can be used to replace the drive wheels on mine they are pretty shot. It also needs new blade and a new bbc pad. Anyone have a source for these parts I will go through my dealer but he's usually quite expensive
I just bought a 20036 personal pace at a pawn shop for 42.00,put a new belt ,blade and drive cable, and it runs like a champ.

Relative has one that's not used and the self-propel bar (the black bar) has no tension. Wish it was an easy fix.

So using it today its doing a great job however besides the tires being bald the drive is a little disapointing. The left wheel started doing this start and stop thing makes the mower bounce. Alittle any ideas what this could bek
Your drive problem is more than one of three things. Sloppy worn wheel bushing, not allowing the gears to stay engaged. Bad drive gear, it should be flat, with no concave wear. Bad key or engagement washer, not allowing the key to pivot properly.

Just looked at it there was a gold ring thing on the axle not in the piece where it should be I slid it back into place and wrapped the axle in cord wrap and zip tied the cord wrap to keep the gold thing in place and protect from strings and things. The drive gear seems to ratchet ok free wheels one direction and engages the other way spinning the whole axle and other wheel I didn't look at condition of drive gear real close it was covered in grease. Does this help any? Its still does the weird stop and go thing
I can't find them can you send links? The part number I have is 51-2741 according to my parts list

This is my parts list I got the whole parts manual off toro website sorry pic is fuzzy I took a shot of my computer screen what part(s) am I going to need rivets? I would rather just replace them with new than to fix. With used also how does one go about greasing the transmission? Unlike the proline this trans has no grease zerk and seeing as this is a 1987 machine I bet it might need some
Can't really tell you which parts you are going to need because I can't see them. #40, the spring may be causing your problem. If the hole in which it rests is gummed with grease and so is the spring it will no work properly. Carefully remove this spring, it may not be easy, clean the hole and spring, reassemble and test. Let's start there.
Forgot to add that when you install the gear back on the shaft it must be in the same direction as when you removed it. Will not work at all if installed wrong.

I will give that a shot next time I have some time to burn it may be a few days till I get it a go. Still wondering about packing the trans with grease I wonder if the whole trans needs to be dropped and if so maybe I should drop the whole rear axle clean everything up and re grease
If you are very careful, you can try to remove the bottom cover and remove the old grease. Use a good multi-purpose grease when replacing, but there is no reason to use a lithium or high temp grease in the gearbox.

So I found a parts mower on craigslist for 40 bucks it was missing air filter cover drive engage cable and had a custom on off switch for mower overall it was beat to hell.
Took the transmission and axle off of parts mower carefully cleaned all parts opened transmission and scraped and cleaned inside of transmission and repacked with marine grease. Put the rebuilt trans and axle on my mower and it was 1130 pm so I couldn't test. Took it out this morning at my first mow and I had put a wrong spring clip on ugh went whole day with it taking up space on my trailer.
Got it home tonight looked into it and the spring clips I had put on the outside of the small gear fell off on both sides. Replaced with proper "c" clips put it together and it worked took it into back yard and drove around.
Also off the parts mower I took the blade because it looked almost brand new. And I took the rubber off the front wheels of the parts mower and put it on the drive wheels of mine so now it has tread I'm excited to try it out in the morning.
Next project is to rebuilt one of the spare engines I have two non working engines and soon ill have a spare and maybe ill try to make a whole spare mower ill have an engine, transmission and axle parts, deck, bag and bbc stuff

Wow is all I have to say I had a minor mishap with a worn c clip replaced with new used it today and just wow. This engine if fantastic it can run circles around my honda I do not have the mulch plug for it yet so its not great at mulching although it does a decent job if grass isn't to long.
Bagging however this is where this machine kills the honda the honda when faced with thick grass will leave a trail of clippings forcing me to go back over it. The toro doesn't leave a single clipping
Ground speed is fast... as fast as my honda maybe faster. Overall with the blade brake I believe this will be my main mower and the honda will be demoted to back up

Got 2 full days use out of this thing it takes the daily grind with dignity
I forgot how nice commercial mowers work it has less power than my honda but leaves a better cut and powers through thick stuff.
I have switched the walk speed to second gear on full speed I have to nearly jog and I love it
The blade brake works very nice and is very convienent no more pushing through gravel and bark for me
I have made my honda a back up/mulcher/weedy lawns mower as it still mulches better at least untill I find a mulch plug for the toro.
Total investment 120 for lawnmower with spare motor, 40 for parts mower, 30 gas traveling and a few hours labor. total: 190 for a fully functioning commercial grade toro lawnmower
