Please post the model and serial numbers of the unit so we can see which drive system you have. COVID-19 has shut down our ESP powers, so you helping us will get you an answer faster. We hate guessing.

Are you trying to say the engine is going backwards ?
If not then we need to know the make model & serial of the mower
In many cases you can cross over the drive belt so the belt is turning the rear drive pulley backwards .

The mower is a MTD Craftsman mower with CVT transaxle.

Is the shifter refusing to go into forward or is that it shifts into forward but wont drive forward?.

This is a very reliable simple transmission. The most common problem is the shifter shuttles from forward to reverse but need a bit of a roll to complete the shift. Try keeping pressure on the shifter as you slowly try and move. It should them complete the movement into forward position. If not see picture above along with the linkages to move the shifting fork into proper position.

Being a 2013 it could also be the shift collar and bevel gears are getting worn and is jumping out of gear. Have to pay attention to the shift fork could also been bent if it has been forced.
