B&S 171432-0529-01 Horizontal Engine

I have an old Troy Built Tiller with the B&S 171432-0529-01 Horizontal engine on it. The tiller has been working perfectly fine for the past couple of years but this year it started to die whenever I put the tines into the soil. The engine runs perfectly at idle and when I start the tines the engine continues to run smoothly until the tines are placed down. I have changed out the spark plugs, fuel lines, fuel filter, I have also cleaned the carborator and done adjustments to get it running the same as it was but the problem still persists and I need to be able to till soon or else I will lose my entire crop of plants Thank you.

Sounds like you have a lean running condition under load. You have an adjustable carb on that engine, so before tearing into the carb I would open the high speed mixture screw about a 1/4 turn allowing more fuel to entire the cylinder under load, to see if anything changes. Also, check to see if the governor is opening the throttle under load. I have mesed wiht the mixture screw while running it under load before I took the carb apart to clean but no adjustments seem to fix the problem.

Is the soil hard clay? Wondering if your soil type is putting the extra load on the engine? Are you trying to go too deep as us men always do .

Agree on checking the transmission oil.

Try to till again, but partially engage the choke, and see if it does better. That will tell us if it is a fuel/air problem.

Also put up the last set of numbers {code}, your engine likely has points, which could also be giving you trouble.

These updraft carbs can be tricky to adjust provided the engine is in good condition. Most of the TB tillers are very old (mid 80's-90s) that have this engine. So it can simply wear and tear on engine. Valve clearances are likely to have closed up and cylinder can be heavily worn.

But here the instructions on how to tune the two piece Flo-Jet carburetor. Note you will need a tachometer for these adjustments.
