Ariens drive pedals won't go down

Been a while since I've asked for help. That's a good thing. I have an Ariens 19hp, 42", model 936083, prod=960460061, ser 041615A33927. It's a hydro axle that I have never seen before. All plastic (2002 vintage) with 2 drive belts. Hydro Gear T2-AABC-1X2B-1GX1. Lots of miles, but moves fine if you have patience.

25% of the time the F\R pedals work fine and it drive. Many time if you go forward, then try to reverse, the reverse pedal will not go down. Then the forward pedal won't push. If you bang them, or force them, they'll work. Laying underneath and watching everything move as the pedals are pressed, I notice that there is a binding from the plastic brackets that are stacked for the brake and the engage\disengage arm.

I have no experience with this trans at all. The short toothed belt is in great shape and I'll replace the main drive belt. Let me know if I need to drop the trans for repair of some type. Thanks, all.

First area to check is the drive belt and pulleys. Is everything in good shape and moving correctly. Then check between the deck frame and where the steering gear is for grass buildup. Take a screwdriver and air compressor blow gun and remove any debris.
 
Hi Tiger. I have the belt off the motor as I am replacing the ACR. All pulley, except the trans (can't see yet) are in fine shape, belt too, but I will replace it. Machine is clean all the way back. The linkage arms all are good, no binds. Connection to the foot pedals was wobbly, so I shimmed and lubed it to be slightly tighter. The binding is on the top of the trans.
 
The problem starts after moving forward first. Then the revere pedal won't go down. When it does, it goes low enough to catch under the foot rest. I can fix that by bending it to the left a bit. The binding seems to be on the top of the trans.

You don't have Hydro Gear T2-AABC-1X2B-1GX1 but a General Transmissions RS-800P. It is a manual CVT transaxle; although, it is variable speed due to the CVT system. There are bearings that fail. and plastic parts that wear and break.
 
Thanks ST, I got the trans info from the parts manual. The second belt made me think of a CVT, but the engage\disengage arm threw me. The CVT's I'm used to seeing have direction selectors. Should I consider this junk or a winter project?
 
What you thinking is the MTD CVT style.

But GTI got involved trying to out do MTD design which has been a failure in my opinion. No internal parts available but most of the externals are available.

Most OEM has dropped the GTI RS800 transaxle series.

Hard to tell if junk or winter project just depends on what actually is wrong. I don't much experience on these so I am of no help.
 
Thanks again, I'm gonna try and get to the top and pull the linkage off to see if the trans shifts or binds. I researched and came up with a few part numbers, but did not check for availability. I don't think I'll open it.
