I just picked up a couple HRM215s for $20 each. the self propel seams to work just fine, and after a carb clean, so do the engines. My question is: long term, are these pretty decent mowers?

Yes, if they were looked after properly with regular oil changes, air filter changes, etc., etc. they'll last a long time. If I recall correctly they also had the GX engine which are excellent. If so nice find for 20 bucks.

The HRM-215's (Harmony) have the lighter grey plastic decks. Hitting a rock in the yard just right can crack or bust a hole in the deck. Mine has a crack in the deck on the ridge below the carburetor, not from a rock but fatigue. I've seen quite a few crack where the engine mounts to the deck. I'm going to try some JB-Weld on the underside of the deck. Would like to stop the crack from progressing.

JB weld is a filler and will not stop the crank
You need to drill a 1/8" hole about 1/2 past the front of the crack to stop it growing then use a plastic bumper bar staple & weld kit to make a proper repair .
They are availible on line from most crash repair suppliers .
