Engine A repair question

I have a Snapper riding mower with a 14 1/2 horsepower B&S engine. The last time I used it, a big cloud of white smoke came out of the tailpipe and it stopped running. I haven't tried to start it or run it since. Any idea as to what could have caused that? Any repair ideas to get it running again? I would appreciate any help.

I would say check the oil level, if OK try to start it.
