Engine starts but won't rev out of idle. Backfiring through carburetor occasionally. I have overhauled the carb and this made no difference. Engine coughs, sputs and smokes like choke is on. Valves are set OK. New Plug. Maybe ignition coil breaking down? Maybe flywheel keyway worn causing out of time situation? HELP! Any help kindly appreciated. John

Still like a carburetor problem to me, bad float, needle valve, vacuum leak?? I find as a rule coil or flywheel key problem they wouldn't run at all.

Your prognosis is fairly right except you missed flooding.
Stat with the easy one.
Flooding - start the engine then pinch closed the fuel supply tube, lockjaw pliers work well of this. If mower runs clean for a little while before it dies = flooding
Coil - buy an inline spark tester and watch it as the engine dies, gaps in the flashing = no spark being sent to the plug
timing - remove the flywheel nut / bolt and look at the key way. If not perfectly lined up , pull the flywheel & check.

When I said carburetor, needle valve or float I was thinking flooding. Just didn't put it down in a word you are right :ashamed:

Hey, thanks for your help. The problem was in the IGNITER/LOW OIL PRESSURE switch. The replacement part was priced at $91.36, too rich for my blood. I disconnected the low oil pressure part of the switch and now the engine runs just fine. I also set the valves (.006). WOOHOO!

Welcome to the real world of buying parts and I said it all along Kawasaki is the leader for over priced parts.
