I have a Sears YTV 16 tractor that had sat for 10 years before I bought it.
I was told it was running then parked, but the deck was missing. It was used
to drag a chain link fence around.
I replaced the ignition switch, the battery, front tires, rebuilt the carb. and cleaned the fuel system.
I got it to run but not well. I found one cylinder cold to the touch even though it had spark.
After a tear down I found a broken rod (see Pic) that may have been caused by a rats
nest over that cylinder. At 656cc and 16Hp, it should be a real strong engine.
Some parts are available, but I find it is hard to match the crankshaft to the block which
is not in bad condition.
Should I rebuild it or part it out?
Does any one have a YTV 16 varidrive?
I think was only made one year.

That is what mine is. Hard to find. They also had GTV and LTV.
Is yours the same numbers?

Or is it 393823 and 393270 for the rod?

Briggs shows the 393270 for use with a standard non ground crankshaft. The undersize rod is a part number 393714 which Briggs is showing as NLA. The part 393823 that you listed in the quote is also NLA.

I have seen some on Ebay. Some I would consider, but how would I know it was the correct one?
What I mean by "worth" rebuild, Is it a good engine or do they break rods often?

Before I would stick any money into this engine there are a few other things I would be checking first. First, is the condition of the cylinders. What are the sizes, are they out of round. Second, have you measured the mag and PTO bushings, are they within specs. Third, have you checked the valve guides, are they within specs. Fourth, what are the condition of the valves, can they be ground and seats lapped in. Will you have to replace the valves. Personally, I would have to consider how much do you want to spend. If you want to properly get this engine back in running condition, please do it the right way and not half way. Rebuild the entire engine or you are wasting your money. I did one last spring who wanted to restore his tractor to original condition. Ground crank, undersize rods, oversize pistons, new valves, etc. Total cost was $850 plus tax. Just my opinion, which many on this forum say is not worth much, it's your money.

 I would take heed in what Rivets has posted, he is spot on. Also check those valve seats. B&S oppy's are notorious for coming loose. If you do refresh/rebuild make sure you install the rods the correct way.

OK then, I will not rebuild it. Parts are NLA. The crank is beyond repair.
The yard tractor is just a parts unit now. I know where there is 2 Sears SS/16's
Thanks for the response.
