Not after only five hours of use. At five hours, you couldn't have filled that filter with manufacturing debris. Leave it on let it do a better job of filtering than a brand new filter would do.

If it sounds "exactly as if it ran out of fuel," that's probably what it did. When warming up, even at fairly high speed, the engine isn't using a lot of fuel. So the problem could still be with fuel supply. One way to find out would be to remove the air cleaner. Start the engine, warm it up...
