I believe I just figured it out. So the play in the counter balance is so bad I can see what looks like marks all over the counterbalance shaft. And I can see a mark on the rod cap. So I believe the play is so bad that the rod is smacking the counterbalance. And the knock only appears at higher...

I put the counterbalance in the crankcase cover and it seemed a lot better. So maybe the part it rests in in the actual block is worn out?

43526 let me just say I am dumb i was getting ready to rtv and noticed I can wiggle the counterbalance gear like a lot. I know the crankcase cover supports the upper half but it is a lot of play.

I can also visibly see and feel that the crank gear is higher than the cam gear and I bet you are right it does look like a new cam

I can actually see in the picture that’s top down the crank gear does look worse. You might have just figured it out that really could be it!

That is very true it could be I will say the gears are really tight and I can’t see any play out of it when I move it with my hands but the camshaft gear does look very new and the teeth look sharp

Ok will try that that’s a good idea. Also if I think I forgot to mention I did pull the deck and pto off and the noise was still there. And I was underneath while it was running and the noise was coming from the front of the tractor from the engine.

Swapped out the intake rod with one that looks ok, and reset valve lash and the valve lift looks ok, runs a little better.. but still running about the same rpm. I'm most likely going to bet its the cam at this point.

I would but the governor isn't the issue it never moves the throttle. It stays wide open and is never pulled back.

Yes it is a single cyl, i have the model number but when entered in my Briggs power portal on the model lookup it comes up as a 16hp so I'm not sure if the number is wrong or not. And yes i manually moved the throttle plate and still doesn't rev where it should.

thanks for the idea that puller worked great. Destroyed the pulley though. took apart the motor. was just hoping to put a new connecting rod in but, when the rod exploded it bent the camshaft and cracked the part where camshaft seats on the block. So at this point the motor is not worth fixing...

Motor blew up. Have to take engine apart but my drive pulley will not come off the motors shaf. i heated it up for 10-15 minutes with a blow torch and I'm using a puller and no luck. Also using lube. i am bending the pulley but at this point i dont care i can buy i new one. any tips or help...
