The new parts are in place and it was a good thing that the old parts got replaced. The pawls were missing, the cover over the pawls was shot. The recoil spring was not very good. There was no pull handle and the cord was too short to reach the handle of the lawn mower.

I will have to check, but I believe that the "generic" version of this is made in Emporia, Kansas. They make several different sizes. Thanks for nudging me. I need one of these to take better care of my equipment. Thanks!

I like that, and that is exactly what I do with the Church yard that I take care of. I borrow the Dixon SpeedZTR 30 and then do the finish mowing at the edges and in tight spots with my own 21" mower. That SCAG is really nice, but more than a bit out of my price range right now. wnlewis

Bertsmobile, I understand that the 30" machines are discontinued and that getting parts is a nightmare. What other brands might have had 30" zero turn mowers that would be worth trying to get? What about the zero turn machines from Dixon before the hydrostatic drive, those with cones, gears...

The best that I have been able to come up with are the following pictures. We need to replace the top assembly, or at least the cogged assembly that engages the top of the engine and to which is attached the pull cord and rewind mechanism.

After looking at the part's diagram, it appears that the brake is on the idler(?) so the wheels can spin in opposite directions if they are lifted off the ground. So, back to seeing if the brake lever is locked up. I didn't think it was. But I think I was looking in the wrong place.

It is indeed good to have photos and notes. Without those memory jogs, it often becomes difficult or impossible to put something back together correctly.

I like the solvents, but only where they can be contained in a tank, or have a hood with an activated charcoal filter to deal with the chemicals. Detergent and water will work very well, especially if the part is put in an ultrasonic cleaner. The only requirement is to dry everything carefully...
