Solution of baking soda and water will boil the crud out of the cable ends. Just stick the end of the cable in the solution.

is this the type of flat terminal you're referring too.....???
just use a brass brush, or some emery cloth...

That is a full-size side post automotive battery, I think he is referring to a half size top post lawn equipment battery like this: (Walmart)
