What's with the off-set wheel?

So I am kinda new to Lawn-Boy ownership, but always wondered about that wierd wheel placement.
What's the advantage? Turning radius? Mulching?

According to the attached Lawn-Boy ad above the reason for the offset wheels is as follows.

CONTOUR CUT !
Only Lawn-Boy gives your lawn "contour cut". This is an exclusive feature --- made possible by the Lawn-Boy's wheel placement design --- prevents scalping. It means the blade won't dig into humps or bumps in your lawn. No more worrying about chopped up lawn surfaces.

In other words the offset wheels will not hit the different ground elevations at the same time thus making for a more level cut.

I hate the off set wheel. It makes mowing on an incline a pain. I think it's just a sales gimmick

I always found that the offset wheel also made trimming around trees easier as you could more easily drag the front of the mower around without lifting it as high. A standard wheel alignment would grab more easily so you had to lift it higher rather than keeping on mowing.

Just my two cents.

It was part of the "trim-edge" deck design. Mowing around objects counter-clockwise allows you to get closer to the object, removing some of the need to trim again. A great feature for sure.

Years ago, the offset wheel design was common on several different mower companies decks.

I always liked it because it gets the grass out from under the mower quicker than the standard side discharge.
With a LAWN it isn't really an issue.
But out here in the country we have YARDS and it really helps.

LOL. I like the feature too. Unfortunately I would only qualify as lawn status.

My lawn has many bumps and humps and when cut with a traditional wheel set up like my Honda, I would get lots of scalping. The Lawnboy provides the best cut for me. Sometimes the right front wheel seems like it gets in the way, but for me I would use no other design.

As a teen I used Lawnboys around the village (Dept. Public Works). They made quick work of lots and cemetaries but that deck can be a nightmare if you have a rutted country pasture of a yard. Still use one for trimming my yard. It's only 35 years old so its got a few decades left in her.:biggrin:
