2016 is 600z B&S 25hp starter removal

I have a 2016 Ferris is 600z with the B&S 25 hp commercial. I’ve replaced the battery and solenoid checks out. I’m only getting about 9 volts at the starter but have a strong 12v at the solenoid with the starter cable removed. Do you have to remove the motor to replace it? I can’t see or touch any mounting bolts under the sheet metal shield holding the starter.

Remove engine cover and you will see the 2 bolts holding the starter on. !/2 inch universal socket or use a torque drive socker. Engine removal not needed.

Before you remove the starter try cleaning BOTH ends of the ground cable. And the positive battery cable. With a corroded connection you can get full voltage qith no load and a large voltage drop under a load.
 
I agree with Hammermechanicman.

You have a multi-meter, so connect one of the leads to the battery positive and the other lead to where the cable connects to the solenoid. Watch the meter reading when you hit the key to crank the engine. If it shows considerable voltage, you have a bad cable or cable end connections.

This is known as a voltage drop (VD) test that many do not understand. How can you read voltage on the same cable using both meter leads? It's known has electron flow and that is what the meter is showing. A normal reading would show like .01V if the cable or connection is good.

You can do the same VD test on the negative cable, and the cable ends to the battery post connection one at a time.

I've seen a lot of good starters replaced due to bad connections or a bad cable wire core.

Actually, you have to remove the engine cover, flywheel, and this plate under the flywheel to get to the 1/2" / T40 bolts. I know because I just built a v-twin one like this a few months ago.
