Can anyone tell me what the problem is??
Thank you
Remove the rocker covers one of the push rods has fallen out. If it's bent than straighten it out and reinstall it. Adjust the rocker to take up any play . The push rod falls out because the rocker comes out of adjustment that's what holds the push rod in place and became the push rod is horizontal when it comes loose it drops down. There's not much spring tension so you can straighten the push rod I've done three like this and it works fine.

I agree there. I do have over $100,000 in inventory and most of it seldom moves. Still having to buy a lot of parts from the distributors. One good thing most parts are only two days out. Even with two distributors of OEM parts I find myself ordering from someone online at times.

I had one customer that didn't want to wait two days for a hex belt and found a competitor that is closing down that had it. That guy took a hit on the profit margin for belt. but at least he made a profit. Still took an hour to put it on but he got bill for the time and he was happy to pay the bill as he saw what i had go thru to put the belt on. Boy a JD 445 deck belt is fun to on, Not. At least I did it under a shade tree on the driveway.
I have a 445. I will never take the deck off that thing again!

Unless you're going tto trash that motor, find out why the rods bent. Examine the valves and rockers. Are they way out of adjustment, do they both push in easily and come out the same distance. Was the mower run low on oil? I would pull the engine apart and retrieve the broken end of the rod. That can do major damage, if not already. If you just throw in new rods, this same thing may happen again and at some very inconvenient time.

Remove the spark plug and turn the engine over slowly by hand and see if that piston is going up and down. Remove the valve covers and see if the push rods are still in place and not fallen out.
Should have done this straight away.... PULL valve cover, low and behold there is a problem Houston...
thanks for all your great info over the years!

Trashing the motor. Bought new JD 54" cut. Might buy new motor to replace trashed motor and use old mower for backup mower.

If you replace the engine on the older John Deere, you have just about spent 100% or more on engine and labor of the value of the mower.

By the time a new cylinder head is installed (pushed valve guide), and the engine is removed and opened up to remove the push rod in sump, you are hundreds of dollars into it for parts and labor.

Of course the new John Deere probably cost about $3800.

Total cost including tax for the new Z325E-54" cut was 2894.65 out the door. It was 30% off if you filled out a credit app and you were not required to use the credit, I paid cash. Original price was 3799.00 before tax, after tax total, 4131.41 verses 2894.65.
