It does this even if the mower belly isn't attached. What are the possibilities for this?

it stutters strains and dies, or instantly dies like a switch was turned off? Were there any changes before this happened?

I had this same problem. On my YTH22v46 it was the interlock safety switch on the lever itself (underneath the plastic dashboard thingy). I replaced mine for about $11 on Amazon - search for Stens 430-550 Interlock Switch. If that is the problem with your mower it might be worth looking into.

start the engine and let the parking brake off
Raise your butt off the seat , the engine should stop
Do the same with the parking brake on, the engine should not stop
IF it does then the seat switch or the switch plug is faulty
Husqvarna use a "tamper proof" plug to prevent idiots by passing the seat switch
The plug causes a lot of problems like this
Flood it with contact cleaner, brake cleaner degreaser, Wd 40 etc etc etc then plug it in & unplug it many times
Then push it tight together and secure with a zip tie done up tight
