Yardman - uneven cut - is this a clutch problem?

We have a Yardman ride-on lawnmower. I asked a local garden machinery place to check the uneven cut and perhaps realign the blades (one blade was catching on the ground). They collected the machine and have come back and told me that the clutch for the cutting deck needs to be replaced, and that this would cost us about 」520 (ie about $590) including labour. There was no hiccup in cutting - once or twice the machine wouldn't start last year (cold battery) but once started, the cutting always started. Does this sound reasonable? It sounds to me as though the mechanic is trying it on and has invented a problem that will be expensive to fix!

Do not let this man touch your mower.

To check the blades turn them so the meet in the middle they should match up even do this with both ends of each blade. This will tell you if one is sitting lower then the other or if you have a bent blade. Try this then we can move on to the next step

(( racing is the only sport that you need two balls ))

Thanks for this warning! I'll need to get him to deliver it back again (and reassemble the bits first) - and he said he wants to be paid for doing this if I'm not going to tell him to go ahead....(!!!)
