Yesterday I tried to push the lever down and normally there is tension as if there is a cable that is engaging the blades. I did not feel that tension and the blades will not engage. Please help. Thank you!

Most likely the cable has broken. Either the end where the cable hooks to the lever has broken, or the most common area is the hook breaks off of the spring where it connect to the deck idler engagement arm.

Either the cable is broken or something is tied around one or both blades. I have had cables on a Murray 42" on broke before. This is a common problem with some MTD mowers. But is an easy and inexpensive fix. If your mower is still under warranty take it to the shop or repair it yourself.

I actually think something came off as well. Part #41, "lift arm". is #9 the sprint I'm looking to replace?

I'm looking at a visual break down of the parts on this website.

I think what your are going to need to replace would be item 14 deck engagement cable. the spring that breaks is at the deck end of the cable.

The part you are showing in your pictures is the item 14 deck engagement cable. if the part they are showing on amazon is the one that they show in the parts breakdown then you have what you need.

The engagement cable worked however I now have a new problem. I googled and the vbelt is 77 3/4 inches long. I picked up 78" belt from the autoparts store. I also had a 77" belt. The mower would not cut on anything but the highest setting #5. So I switched out the 78" belt for the 77". It wouldn't cut at all. I put the 78" belt back on per the diagram and it won't cut. Did I stretch the 78" belt too far? Will buying a OEM spec belt fix the problem?

Non OEM types belts don't work well on MTD products, or if they work usually not for long. You could also have another problem that I will discuss if need be, but for now lets get the belt straightened out.
